John Hawley & Son pocket watch mystery
Hi,

Can anyone help please. We have been left a pocket watch which I am unable to find anything about on the internet. It is a large pocket watch which says 'John Hawley & Company Regd.' and then 'London & Coventry'

It's got imperial numbers around the sides with a second hand dial located at the bottom. The person who left it was a Jeweler from Leeds. It is housed in a silver casing and looks very much like a fusee. When I flip the back cover it only has access to the key socket for winding up. I am unable to get into the mechanism itself - I think it is a screwed cover protecting it and don't really want to access in case springs jump out. Surprisingly it is in working order.

It is hallmarked silver with the number 055 on the inside of the casing. Has anyone any ideas of its history and does it mean its rare given I can't find any info. Its a very handsome watch.

Thank you

PS First post...

Sorry, correction: Its Roman Numerals

RE: John Hawley & Son pocket watch mystery
Hi
John Hawley pocketwatches are usually from around the mid to late 19th century, would need to look at the hallmark to date it precisely

Its hard to give much information about it - a lot depends on the movement - you say it looks like a fusee..if so then that would be a quality pocketwatch fitting that period - are you sure the cover is not a complete cover that contains a pocketwatch - or is the cover an actual part of the watch ? as it sounds like a pair case to me.

I think the movement is more important than the watch being made of silver - although much better to have it made of silver rather than a base metal.

At a guess ...and it is a blind guess as I can't see a picture or handle the watch.... if it is a fusee and in great condition in full working order then could be up to £200 full whack... but not working/bad condition etc will be much less - I wouldn't plan a holiday - its not a Del boy £6.2 million !!!

you can say its rare as not a common make but rare does not necessarily mean expensive as there were so many independant makers

RE: John Hawley & Son pocket watch mystery
Thanks Paul, that's helpful. Looking at it with my layman eyes the casing looks integral rather than a paired case.

Thanks again
PS I cancelled the holiday
