digital repairs

Is it harder to actually repair a digital watch? I have heard a few myths stating if one piece is not available its possible to substitute a similar make/model, even if its not exact. Plausible?

I'm not a repairman so I can't tell the exact answer. But it is possible these days to interchange parts even though the part that is replaced has a different brand.

It doesn't matter to me really because it is the job of the repairman to fix my broken watch. I don't repair my own watches for I might worsen the problem.
