Why Are Vintage Watches That Expensive?
I'm wondering why many vintage watches costs a lot of money. Is it just because collectors want it or is it because those kind of watches were of limited supply?

RE: Why Are Vintage Watches That Expensive?
Yes, it's definitely supply and demand. If people want the watch and they aren't being made anymore, that will drive prices up quite easily. Sometimes people get lucky and find one cheaply if the seller doesn't realize what they have.

RE: Why Are Vintage Watches That Expensive?
Vintage watches are rare. Watch collectors want these watches because, just like any other antique items, they represent eras. Some of these watches are heirlooms which makes them even more highly-prized by collectors.

I think it is just a matter of supply and demand. If there is great demand for something, then people will bid for it and that means the highest bidder takes it home. I wouldn't mind having a vintage watch except for the cost.

RE: Why Are Vintage Watches That Expensive?
Now I wonder how collectors know if the vintage watch they are buying is real or fake if the makers of those watches have long passed away.
Do you think watches that were used by royalties or famous people in the past will have large value even if they are not working well? |

RE: Why Are Vintage Watches That Expensive?
Provenance is very important if one is going to spend a great deal of money on a vintage watch, but no doubt some get swindled.
Yes, I think the history of a watch can outweigh its functionality when setting the price. |

RE: Why Are Vintage Watches That Expensive?
Anything that once belonged to a celebrity or a royal figure would be worth huge sums of money. According to the ESPN website, two pieces of gum chewed by Luis Gonzales, the Arizona Diamondbacks slugger, fetched $10,000. If a wad of gum can cost thousands of dollars, then it's not hard to see why a watch, even if it's not working at all, would have a large value.

Now that gum is more than priceless. I wonder what the collector will do with that gum. So I guess the first watch that Prince William will cost a fortune if ever he chooses to sell it.

People want a piece of history and a unique watch to wear. The more rare and limited they are the more you are going to pay. |

I think if you are talking about a collector then they would be able to tell if they are real or fake. If they are a everyday person though it would be hard. I am just starting out collecting and I don't know for sure. |
