Why Are Vintage Watches That Expensive?

I was wondering if there is a guideline where we can check if a watch is really an original watch or just a copycat. Vintage watches cost a fortune but if they are fake then we just spent our money to nothing.

I have yet to see anything online or offline that is vintage that you can not find a way to see if its real or not. That would be insane, if you can not prove it then you should not be able to sell it "as vintage".
